7 Unexpected Details to Tick Off Your Checklist

Organising a wedding is a massive undertaking. Involving so many moving pieces, it’s inevitable that certain smaller things will slip through the cracks. Some brides will leave these things to the last minute, while other things will be forgotten entirely! Consult our list of easily forgotten details below to ensure the things that could make a difference to your day don’t go overlooked. 

1/ RING BOX

Set a box or other vessel aside to keep your treasured wedding rings safe and secure ahead of the vows. Whether a classic velvet box, a pillow with a ribbon to tie the rings to or something more personal to your relationship or wedding theme (see some of our favourites here!), your choice will ideally be easy for your ring bearer to carry and compliment the ring(s) well in detail photographs.

Consult with your florist about options for personalising yours and your bridesmaids’ bouquets with a suitable wrap. From delicate, flowing ribbon in your shade of choice to lace, jute, or a minimal tie leaving the natural greens of the stems exposed. Attach a charm, locket or brooch to the bouquet to add a deeper significance or pretty decoration to the beauty of the flowers.

3/ DRESS HANGER

Elevate the overall aesthetic of the wedding gown in photos by choosing something extra special for the hanger. Inscribed hangers are a popular way to go with a whole array of options, from first names, ‘bride’, ‘Mrs’ or ‘Mrs Powell’ to the wedding date or both yours and your fiancé's names together. Others prefer to choose a more elegant style or material than the usual plastic or opt for a hanger with added decoration like ribbon or flowers. Matching hangers can make a lovely gift for your bridesmaids, or even the groom!

If any part of your wedding will take place outdoors, planning for various weather eventualities (rain, wind, heat, cold) is a pretty big detail, but one that is often taken for granted. Discuss your options with your venue based on different scenarios and, if relevant, ask how much notice you’ll need to give to switch to the backup plan (say, a marquee instead of open air or an alternative room indoors). Once you know exactly how tricky weather situations will be handled, you’ll feel a lot more prepared for whatever the elements throw at you!

In the social media age, the wedding hashtag is becoming standard wedding practice. It’s the perfect way to collate various media, well wishes and other interactions related to the wedding and it’s as easy as brainstorming a pun or portmanteau of your names! Sort this out early on and include on your wedding website, if you’re having one, to allow people to use it in the lead up to the wedding too. 6/ COLLECTING DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

Various dietary requirements pose a particularly complicated problem for menu decisions. Vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, allergies and intolerances – it can seem like a minefield to give everyone a delicious, filling meal. Arm yourself with all the facts (and as early as possible) so that you can create the best possible dishes for your guests. There’s no one correct way to approach the topic with attendees but asking for details on your RSVP cards and communicating directly to float ideas for what will work can both be useful options.

7/ APPOINT DAY-OF HELPERS

Lastly, unless you’ve enlisted a wedding coordinator, don’t forget that you’ll likely need support from helpful friends and family to ensure things run smoothly. Some typical wedding day responsibilities are listed below, but be sure to make helpers’ jobs easier by giving plenty of notice and clarity on what you’d like them to do and when.

  • Wrangling guests for photographs. This guards against unnecessary delays tracking people down. If possible, have someone who knows you, your families and your bridal party well!
  • Gathering and transporting gifts and cards. With all the generosity sure to be shown by your guests, the last thing you want is to lose track of any gifts. Have a plan for where these will be taken, and a helper or two prepared to orchestrate their safe delivery. (You may also want someone to ensure no other personal items or other lost property is left behind at the end of the night!)
  • Fielding questions from vendors. It’s your day, so ideally you’ll be insulated from any issues or problems as much as possible. This requires a particularly responsible individual to look after your phone, and be on hand as a point of contact for all vendors!
  • Distributing tips or payments. You may prefer to handle this as a couple to express your thanks in person. If you have any concern over fitting this in, then it is best to delegate the task to a responsible friend.
