The Top 10 First Dance Songs for 2015

By Blue Steel and

Choosing (and agreeing on!) your first dance song for the reception is often one of the most difficult last minute decisions you have to make, especially since your first dance is one of the most special and intimate moments of your wedding reception. So we decided to make things a little bit easier for you and asked Sam Browne, the frontman for one of Auckland’s most popular wedding covers bands, Blue Steel, to make you a list of the top 10 songs for the 2015/16 wedding season. From ballads to dance tracks, these modern hits are definitely the best songs to start your wedded life to!

1. Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud

A beautiful acoustic song, gorgeous chorus and perfect lyrics for the first time on the dance floor with your partner in life as husband and wife.

2. Leon Bridges – Coming Home

All the vibe of Motown’s best, Coming Home is perfect for a vintage-style first dance. Think Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye.

3. Coldplay – A Sky Full of Stars

This one is epic!  If you and your partner are fans of staying out all night dancing in clubs, this might be the song for your wedding.

4. Mark Ronson (featuring Bruno Mars) – Uptown Funk

Just try and not nod your head when this one kicks off.  Groove for days, and Bruno Mars is one point as always.  Be warned - everyone will want to dance when this one kicks off!

5. Kelly Clarkson (featuring John Legend) – Run, Run, Run

A truly gorgeous ballad.  If you’re looking for something slow, sombre and deep, this one could be the right choice for your first dance.  This may also be suitable for your processional.

6. Sam Smith – Lay Me Down

Another slow one, but what a voice and what a chorus!  Sam Smith has never been better than on Lay Me Down.

7. Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance

Another party starter, this one is a lot of fun and will have everyone from the youngsters to Grandma out on the dancefloor!

8. Maroon 5 – Sugar

With their inspired music video featuring Maroon 5 turning up and blowing minds at weddings all over LA, they have cemented this one on the list of 2015’s finest.

9. Ben Howard – Only Love

A groovy acoustic number from Ben Howard, well suited to the vintage, bohemian vibe of many weddings in 2015.

10. Ellie Goulding – How Long Will I Love You?

This one gives me chills.  Ellie’s beautiful distinctive voice is perfect in this ballad, and the song moves at a great speed for a first dance.  Short and sweet at just over two and a half minutes.
