This Spring, the wedding runway has brought many new and reworked show-stopping innovations to bridal fashion. The team at Auckland Weddings couldn’t wait to get in on the action and so we’ve put together a list of the most exciting, original, and modernised designs for your own bridal inspiration! Perhaps you want something a little different, on-trend, and eye-catching? This is the perfect place to start! Read on for 2016’s bridal trends, all in one place & straight from the runway.
Reem Acra Spring 2016 Bridal Collection
Bohemian locks, which have been so popular this year, seem to have been left behind within the bridal fashion of 2016. Instead, we are seeing the immergence of nymph-like braids, such as those sported by models in the recent Reem Acra fashion show. Though simple, the braid can be dressed up or altered in so many ways and we can’t wait to see brides and hairstylists employ this trend in the coming wedding season!
Stylish and sophisticated, the single-loop chignon is a strong, architectural bridal hair-do that is both surprising and fashion-forward. Worn to either the side or in the centre, the 2016 bridal chignon makes the most of a bride’s facial features and décolletage. It is also a great basic hairstyle that will easily hold up hair accessories or a veil.

Sweet and simple, the ballerina bun is back and in full force! Designers this year have been adorning ballerina buns with butterflies through to show stopping jewel and flower crowns. This is a classic hairstyle and we’re stoked to see it back and dominating the runway!

Once thought to only belong in the 90’s, the frosted lip is finally back! It may have taken since Rodarte’s prediction at New York Fashion Week 2014, but the gorgeous shimmery shades of lipstick have made their comeback. This time they skipped unnatural blues and greens and have worked their way back into bridal makeup in the form of subtle pinks and golds, or a combination of the two!
Instead of the fake tan, this year designers have been going for pale luminance with their bridal makeup. The “English rose” ideal of feminine beauty seems to have come back hand in hand with the revisit of Victorian fashion. This look was achieved by using foundation that was a shade or so lighter than the model’s actual complexion. Youthful colour was brought in with natural looking blush and lip-colour. Strobing is another complementary trend that uses a highlighter powder to accentuate the bride’s natural glow.

Strong brows have gone from being hot this year in everyday fashion, to being hot at the altar in 2016. Bridal models are sporting strong, bold eyebrows that add to the natural beauty designers are trying to emphasize with their “English rose” make-up trend. These bold brows can really offset your eyes and frame the whole face.

This is what the future may hold: brides choosing to hang up the long white dress and opt for elegance and practicality in a bridal jumpsuit! Made of anything from lace to silk, jumpsuits are a beautiful new innovation in bridal attire and we won’t be surprise if they become a classic!
Zuhair Murad Spring 2016 Bridal Collection
Bridal fashion has come full circle and is revisiting the very era that created the white wedding dress – the Victorian era! This time, fashion forward designers are approaching the style without the use of hoop skirts and corsets and are instead using multitudes of lace and tulle or sturdy silks. These are the sorts of wedding dresses imagined in fairytales and it’s so exciting to see that they’re back and elegantly restyled for the modern bride.

Ideal for summer weddings and for practicality on the dance floor, designers have taken the cocktail dress and the wedding gown and created something truly exceptional. 2016 seems set on creating game changers, first with the bridal jumpsuit and now with the bridal cocktail dress, which may just be a pivotal point in wedding fashion!
Vera Wang Spring 2016 Bridal Collection (left) Carolina Herrera Spring 2016 Bridal Collection (right)
Fairytale-like wedding gowns are a strong theme in the latest 2016 wedding collections. Many of the looks created by top designers such as Vera Wang and Marchesa adorned their bridal models in gowns with full skirts of tulle or ostrich feathers. In dresses like these, brides of 2016 will really look as though they’re floating down the aisle.

Letting figures and skin-tone show through, sheer lace wedding dresses are huge this bridal season. Models wearing these creations often wore elegant and sophisticated bridal undergarments underneath, which not only enhanced the dress but also were a fashion statement within themselves. These are daring gowns and we are excited to see brave and couture-loving brides take on this fashion-forward challenge!

Three-dimensional floral applique was big on the runway this year and is predicted to be one of the key wedding trends of 2016. The stunning intricacy of three-dimensional floral detail is a huge head turner and we can’t wait to see brides rocking this look soon! Spring blossoms on a dress? Yes please!

An exciting innovation and one we didn’t see coming are watercolor prints, trending right now on the wedding runway! Making use of florals and pastels, wedding gowns are taking a step away from traditional white and broadening the horizons of bridal fashion. Putting other colors onto the dressmaker’s palette gives mores options to brides who are better suited to colour rather than white or cream and as such, we’re guessing this innovation is here to stay!

Bridal designers look to be broadening the wedding dress’ colour palette, introducing soft blushes as an extension of creams and ivories. This is a stunning new adaption of the wedding dress and great for women who are better suited to warm colours than to shades of white. Blush wedding gowns look incredible when coupled with the “English rose” make-up trend mentioned above.

Though skirts may be floaty and fairytale-like, necklines are plunging in many of the 2016 Spring collections! Making the most of a woman’s clavicle and cleavage, V-neck dresses are baring as much as possible. Coupled with intricate lace, beading or rich silks, these dresses are bold, fashion-forward and absolutely fantastic!
