Congratulations, you’re engaged! So, what’s next?

Melissa, the founder of Personalised Favours, has worked in the wedding industry for many years and is constantly asked by newly-engaged couples which type of invitations are the best to send out before the big day. Invitations are an important part of the planning and so Melissa has put together a critiqued list of six different options for wedding invitations backed by her extensive knowledge and experience. Selecting the right invitation is a personal decision that will be largely dictated by your choice of theme and budget. Remember, it’s your day, so you need to choose what’s right for you!

D.I.Y Invitations

Price Range: $1.00 - $9.00 each

DIY weddings are very popular at the moment with many brides choosing to make their own invitations because it allows them to control the creative process, save costs and add their own personal touch. With so many products, embellishments and tools available, it’s no wonder couples are opting for the DIY option.

The Good: Feel a great sense of accomplishment from making your own invite, it will be cheaper than professionally made invitations, and there are lots of options and tutorials available.

The Bad: Need a lot of spare time to put them together, they can come off looking very cheap if not done well, and the materials and required equipment can be quite expensive.

The Bottom Line: If you are a very crafty person and have a lot of spare time on your hands, then I say, go for it!  But keep the above restrictions in mind.

Electronic Invitations

Price Range: Free - $0.50 each

Electronic Invitations are commonly referred to as evites and are another invitation option. Sent either as emails or through social networks such as Facebook, this form of wedding invitation remains a small but slowly growing tool primarily for informal, small weddings.

The Good: Can be created quickly, the cost is either very low or free, and the guest list is easy to manage.

The Bad: Very informal, unable to reach older or non-tech savvy family members, and may trivialise the pre-wedding process.

The Bottom Line: There is something more formal and enjoyable about receiving a well-made invitation through the mail. Electronic Invitations are only appropriate for informal weddings.

Professional Paper Invitations

Price Range: $6.00 - $20.00+ each

There is something special about receiving a beautiful and professionally created paper wedding invitation. A lot of competition exists in the wedding market and all types of boutique businesses popping up and offering an array of styles and trends to compliment the theme of your wedding day.

The Good: There are endless options, you can select something that perfectly matches your theme, and a lot of the hard work will be removed.

The Bad: They can take a long time to be made, can be very expensive, and are not very unique from many other wedding invitations.

The Bottom Line: Professionally made paper invitations are generally quite stunning and there are lots of invitation professionals out there who produce fantastic work. They can be quite costly however, and often, these invitations lack the wow factor that other options provide.

Magnetic Invitations

Price Range: $2.10 - $2.50 each

Magnet invitations are a brilliant and practical invitation idea. There is always the worry that a guest may misplace their invite or forget the wedding details. This way it is easily accessible and can be viewed daily.

The Good: Large variety available, can feature engagement images, very practical, affordable price, and save-the-dates are also available to match the theme.

The Bad: Due to the way they are printed, the invitations cannot include individual guest names, and they aren’t as formal as high-end paper or engraved invitations.

The Bottom Line: Magnet invitations are a great option for a couple on a budget and are the most practical invitation on the market. They can be easily personalised by including a photo of the couple or a shot of the wedding location.

Engraved Wooden Invitations

Price Range: $5.50 - $10.50 each

If you are channelling a rustic or country theme for your wedding, engraved wooden invitations are the perfect fit. Wooden invitations provide a stunning distinctiveness, representing a stylish and unique alternative to traditional paper invitations.

The Good: Very unique and impressive, cost is below professionally made paper invitations and almost in line with handmade invites, can include guest names, and comes with magnetic backing.

The Bad: May not suit all wedding themes, are non-traditional and may not be to everyone’s tastes.

The Bottom Line: The finish and detail on wooden invitations is achieved by using a computer-guided laser engraving machine. The wood itself is very light weight and strong and costs no extra to post. Matching wooden save-the-dates, place cards, and menus are also available. If your wedding theme is country or rustic, I couldn’t recommend this invitation style highly enough.

Engraved Acrylic Invitations

Price Range: $4.50 - $9.00 each

Acrylic Invitations are currently the hottest item in the invitation market.  Available in a variety of colours and at a price below both traditional paper invitations and engraved Wooden Invitations, acrylic invitations offer an enticing and unique option.

The Good: Range of colours and designs available to suit almost all wedding themes, an attractive price, can include customised guest names, made from strong but light acrylic, can include a magnetic backing and come in two sizes.

The Bad: On lighter shades of acrylic such as clear and frosted, a magnetic backing cannot be attached and due to the material used, these invitations are unable to be folded.

The Bottom Line: Acrylic Invitations are engraved using state-of-the-art laser engraving machines.  The invitations feature amazing detail and there are no restrictions on artwork design. Matching save-the-date, place cards and gift tags are available. Given their versatility and uniqueness, I believe Acrylic Invitations are a new and popular trend that is likely to continue.
