How to Choose the Right Wedding Suit for Your Style
By Zahn Trotter

An ill-fitting suit is the fastest way to make a guy look tacky, buta perfectly tailored suit will ensure any groom looks his absolute best on his wedding day. Barkers offers a comprehensive one-on-one tailoring consultation at their High St. store. This week, Zahn and Sam from Auckland Weddings were lucky enough to experience the service first hand - they were 'suit'ably impressed.

Upon arrival, we were impressed with the tasteful decor of the space. Beautiful, heritage building ceilings coupled with marble, leather and wood notes everywhere confirmed we had entered a true gentleman’s establishment. We were warmly welcomed by Hillas from the Barkers team, immaculately presented in a navy blue suit and a tartan tie, both from Barkers' brand new range. After offering us a beer (which we gladly accepted), he took us through to the Tailoring Room.

Before we got started, our consultant Hillas asked us a few questions about our day-to-day lives to get a feel for the ways in which we’re likely to wear our new suit, quickly ascertaining what we were both looking for. Our suits needed to be suitable for year round wear, able to be dressed up for work and events, and dressed down for socialising and weekends. We could just imagine Hillas ascertaining exactly what a groom should wear by asking a few questions about their wedding style and what they felt most comfortable and confident wearing.

His suggestions included jackets that were versatile enough to wear with jeans, but still compatible with a full suit and tie scenario. Hillas provided excellent feedback on what he felt did and didn’t work with our personal styles, and after each trying a handful of different options, we both settled on a choice we were happy with.

Next came the details. Different tie and belt/shoe combinations radically change the look and feel of a suit, and there was an array of excellent choices on offer. Zahn ended up settling for a mid-tone blue suit with a brown tie, worn with a dark burgundy leather belt and shoes. Sam went with a bolder blue suit paired with oxblood shoes, tie and pocket square.

After being measured up for some minor alterations to ensure the suits would fit us perfectly, we were on our way. Less than 24 hours later, we received a friendly text from Justin at Barkers letting us know the alterations were complete and our suits were ready for pickup.

We were really impressed with the service, the quality of the garments, and the quick turnaround with delivering the finished product ready to wear. We would highly recommend booking a consultation with the team for your wedding suit and those of your groomsmen - you'll have an enjoyable experience that will likely provide you with style tips to carry on into your married life! If you turn up not quite sure what you're looking for, you'll leave completely satisfied.
