Imagine walking into your beautiful venue filled with close friends and family and the lighting is set to perfection, complimenting your favourite colours or perhaps your dress or even the wedding cake. Simple things like lighting can transform a plain wedding venue into something only found in fairytales! But this is exactly what many couples often leave to the last minute or often leave out completely. You might think lighting your wedding ceremony or reception is as simple as flipping on a light switch or two. But to transform your wedding occasion from standard to simply stunning, you'll probably need to take a more illuminating approach to your decor. "Lighting creates a mood," says Mix Media Events owner James Jefford, "and when done well, lighting can make everything, including your wedding flowers, the cake, your guests and the venue, look even better.” Read on to discover the right way to plan your wedding lighting!
Use Colour
Think outside your wedding palette when you use coloured lighting. If you've used sage throughout your wedding, shy away from green lighting — it might be too much, and green isn't always flattering. Opt for colours that complement all skin tones, like magenta or a soft rose.
Take advantage of the effect colour can have on the atmosphere by changing the shades through the course of the reception. For example, if your cocktail hour starts around sunset, you can splash your room with golden tones. During dinner, consider soft lighting that will mimic flickering candlelight and give warmth and ambience to the occasion. As the party progresses, Mix Media Events suggests changing the lighting to something more exciting and vibrant like strong oranges or purples. This transition is simple with intelligent lighting that can be programmed to coordinate the whole lighting set up and with the touch of a button, the whole mood of the room can be changed.
Do Your Homework
Companies that specialise in lighting will happily sit down with you and partner and show you examples of both their past work and lighting effects and will discuss proposals for your venue. Do not be afraid to ask what colours they can do and if they are able to change them quickly and easily on the day if you change your mind. Depending on the lighting fixtures used and how they are set up, when the dancing starts, they can be set to change colour in line with the beat (tempo) of the music to create a fantastic party atmosphere!
Find Your Pro
There are a couple ways to find a wedding lighting specialist. First, ask your event designer or wedding florist if they do their own lighting. If not, they may have a lighting pro they regularly work with. Or, the coordinator at your reception venue could probably recommend a lighting company that has worked with the venue before. Be sure to ask to see pictures of the space transformed by various lighting arrangements. Don't be surprised if your lighting designer has a background in theater – many experts use the same technology and techniques in weddings that they’ve honed creating dramatic sets for the stage.
