Even though every engaged couple has unique ideas on the style, theme and feel of their big day, all brides and grooms-to-be have something in common – they want their wedding to look amazing and they want their guests to have an equally wonderful time. But, to put it bluntly, bad lighting can totally mess up your dreams of a picture perfect wedding. With this in mind, we asked lighting expert Siobhan Tomlin from La Lumiere to explain how good lighting can transform your wedding venue into something incredibly special!
It doesn’t matter how many painstaking hours you may have spent scrolling through Pinterest, collecting jars, hand sewing bunting and painting chalkboards, if the lighting is wrong your décor can go from looking chic to looking eek! And it won’t make a difference if you have flown in the newest, hippest DJ on the Ibiza club scene to play all the sickest beats, if your dance floor is too bright, your guests won't be cutting shapes on the night.
Quite frankly, good lighting is a necessity not a luxury, and I’ll tell you why.
Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, lighting sets the whole tone for your wedding. It creates atmosphere and atmosphere IS everything.
A professional will ensure that you have the right style and amount of lighting that is not only flattering (very important if you have spent all that time and money on hair and makeup!) but will also create the perfect vibe for your big day whether it be relaxed, festive, magical or romantic. And naturally your guests will pick up on this and feel more comfortable, more excited, and will be more likely to have a good time and brave the D-floor.
Speaking of which, a professional will be able to make sure that the dance floor is lit perfectly - dim enough to look like a fun and inviting place to be but bright enough to avoid Granny falling over Uncle Bob and creating an inadvertent mosh pit.
These days most people aren't going for the traditional white wedding. Matching chair covers, table runners and cookie cutter style weddings are becoming a thing of the past. And why shouldn’t they when there are so many options to suit each individual couple? From luxe to rustic and carnival to vintage, there are a huge array of exciting styles you can choose. Couples want their special day to be unique and a reflection on them and who they are as a couple and, as such, spend a lot of time thinking about décor and design. A professional will be able work with you to come up with the right lights to compliment your style. Whether it be fun festoons for rustic, extravagant chandeliers for luxe, pretty string lights and jar chandeliers for a bohemian look, or even gorgeous icicles and winter trees for a magical winter wonderland. The right lighting will make your décor pop and look amazing!
A lighting specialist will also be able to look at your venue and tell you which lights would work best, where to optimise and how to compliment your venue’s beauty. They can focus lights on the parts you would like emphasised and hide the parts you don’t. Lights can literally transform even the plainest room into something fabulous and if you add some beautiful draping to the lights then the difference can be dramatic. If you don't believe us check out the ‘transformations’ page on La Lumiere’s website!
And last, but definitely not least, the final reason why lighting is so important on your big day is, of course, your photographs!
After the last song had been played, the last champagne cork popped and the last sparkler put out after your guest’s have waved you off, your dream wedding may start to feel like exactly that, a dream. But wait, you have photographs that you are going to get to keep FOREVER. And how disappointing it would be if those photographs come out dark and unflattering due to poor lighting.
Any wedding photographer worth their Canon 5D Mk3 high-tech digital camera will tell you how important lighting is for getting those beautiful snaps that last a lifetime and bring a tear to your eye for all the right reasons. Again, another reason why you need good lighting for the dance floor, is for that all important first dance photograph, which no doubt you have already thought about turning into a large beautiful print to hang in your living room for all to admire - with the words to your first dance song creatively photoshopped into the background of course (ahem, thank you Pinterest!).
And, if that’s not enough of a reason to convince you, the other bonus in hiring a professional is that they will take care of everything for you. They will work with you to help you design a gorgeous and tasteful look that works for you and compliments the venue. The brightness levels will be spot on and, of course, they will ensure that it is installed professionally with not a sneaky LED or bulb out of place. Basically, they will take all the stress off so you can concentrate on dealing with other things, like the dreaded seating plan (sorry you’re on your own with that one!).
So remember, if you want your day to be as beautiful and perfect as it possibly can be, think about the lighting early and to set aside some of your budget to hire an expert. It’s the bright thing to do! (Sorry, couldn't resist ending with a good lighting pun…).
