Shaye & Leo's love story takes them from Sicily, all the way home to Aotearoa.

“It’s a story we love to tell."

"We met while working on yachts in Sicily, where long days and close quarters quickly revealed how naturally we fit together. For four years, we shared an intense, adventurous life at sea, growing closer with every crossing.

In February 2020, I (Shaye) left yachting to begin a new chapter on land — and just as I did, the world changed. With borders closed and Leo still abroad without a NZ visa, he couldn’t enter the country. What followed was a year apart, filled with uncertainty, distance, and longing. Yet through it all, we held onto each other.

After endless paperwork and what felt like countless COVID tests, Leo was finally allowed into New Zealand, and we could breathe again. Together, we built the life we had only dreamed about — buying our first home and welcoming our beautiful puppy, Benji.

Later, on Westminster Bridge in London, Leo asked me to marry him, the city lights reflecting the moment perfectly. We found our dream venue at Abel Estate and celebrated our love with a sun-soaked summer wedding surrounded by the people who mean the most to us.”

What is one aspect of your wedding that felt totally “you”?

“The whole wedding felt very ‘us’ — relaxed, warm, and centred around good food, drinks, music, and being with our closest people. Nothing was too structured or tied to a strict timeline.
We ended up doing our first dance without any announcement; whoever happened to be around at the time saw it, and that’s exactly how we wanted it to be. It felt so natural and authentic.”

What part of the day or planning felt like your best investment?

“Our photographer was incredible. She made us feel completely comfortable and effortlessly beautiful. She captured the day with such artistry and care — every moment, every emotion, preserved so perfectly. We now have so many stunning photos to treasure, and we’ll be forever grateful for the memories she gave us.”

Did you put your own twist on any traditions, or break a few entirely?

“Yes, we put a twist on a few traditions. We hid our wedding rings under a random chair — and by pure chance, the best man happened to be sitting in it. We also took celebratory shots right after signing the wedding papers, which made the moment even more fun and memorable. And we chose to do a first look before the ceremony, which was so special. It gave us a quiet moment to connect, shake off the nerves, and just be together before the whirlwind began. It’s a memory we’ll cherish forever.”

What caught you off guard, in the best or most unexpected way?

“The speeches were unforgettable. Some of our favourite people shared the most heartfelt words — you could really feel how much love and care they have for us. There were a few cheeky comments too, of course, but that’s a given!”

Do you have any advice for couples just getting started?

“Surround yourselves with a great team who can help bring your day to life — a wonderful celebrant, a supportive venue team, and a photographer you truly trust.

Most importantly, enjoy the day and be as present as you can. One piece of advice we were given — and are so grateful we followed — was to stick together. Move among your guests as a pair, sharing each moment side by side. It kept us from being swept in different directions, and it made the day feel fuller, richer, and so much longer because we experienced everything together.”
