Everybody's, Auckland City
Nick had moved to London for a few years, and had returned to Wellington. We had known each other before he left, but not that well. On his return, we kept bumping into each other out and about in town, and he eventually got the courage to ask me out on a proper date... as they say, the rest is history. We had been together a few years, and Nick organised a winter getaway to Thailand. On the second night, after taking me out for a couple of cocktails and walking along the beach, Nick was getting up the nerve to propose - but I really didn't get what he was on about (I thought it was just a fancy dinner, which I was chuffed about!). He really did have to spell it out for me - I was so surprised! Nick's story goes that I had been dropping hints for a year, my story goes that it wasn't really something I had been thinking about too much! That said, it was an awesome proposal, and a fantastic holiday that Nick had planned to the very last detail, with lots of little surprises.
We didn't really have a particular theme in mind; our big idea for the day is that we wanted our guests to enjoy themselves as much as we did. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone to attend - that is why we decided to have our wedding in Auckland, where a lot of our family and friends are located. We chose Everybody's because not only was it in the perfect location, but it also fit our style. It was a gorgeous space (how great is the white-washed brick wall & staircase!), and a bit more urban than say a vineyard. We had a fun ceremony, with lots of laughter, and both our Mum's drew out names from all the guests attending to be our witnesses to sign the register - that was a nice twist! We decided not to have a sit down dinner, just more of a cocktail style night, so all our guests could catch up in a relaxing atmosphere. Everybody's sorted all our gorgeous food, and made beautiful cocktails for the guests to enjoy after the ceremony & later in the evening. We were looked after so well. Our venue was styled by the lovely Mel Holt from All the Frills. After a bit of research & discussion, we kind of ended up with an Urban/Botanical style. We had gorgeous greenery everywhere, and the courtyard was decked out with comfy couches, long benches and an outside bar with a living wall - just beautiful! I had done all our botanical themed signage, and one of our main accessories was my illustrated backdrop for our ceremony - that was my little labour of love for the wedding! I can honestly say our venue looked better than I had ever imagined - just amazing. Oh, and the dress - it went down a treat! I love a bit of rose gold. That was my first wedding purchase, 1 shop, 1 day, off the rack. Dream!
Do what you want to do - what suits you as a couple. Aside from a couple of ceremony necessaries, there are no rules in weddings. But do think about your guests - what would you want to do if you were attending a wedding? We had Mel, who was a fabulous stylist, set up, decorate & pack down our venue. This took a whole lot of the admin away from ourselves. Appointing someone who can organise the venue set-up will free up a whole lot of time and leave you free to do other, way more relaxing things! (Spa day anyone?) Enjoy it... this is not something to stress about. I loved planning our big day. (Oh, and give your guests a drink on arrival - we had a great win with this one!)
1/ Monique - My Mum seeing me in my dress for the first time - she hadn't seen it and there is a great photo of her reaction. Everyone started crying! And having my 97 year old Poppa attend. He's the best. 2/ Nick - Seeing Mon walk down the aisle, even though we had already done a first look and seen each other - walking down the aisle in that dress - wow! 3/ Both of us - honestly, we can't pick out one thing, it was such an awesome night, just having all your family & friends together in one place is such a special thing (it somehow finished with the bride and a couple of the lads digging in with forks and eating the dessert table cheesecake leftovers, and possibly a loud rendition of Bruce Springsteen on the dance floor).
