Lighting on your wedding day may be something you’ve put down to a matter of luck. But the alternative to crossing your fingers with regards to the weather is to think about a few feature lighting elements that will make every backdrop phenomenally photogenic. Ask any photographer and they’ll tell you that good lighting is pivotal for a spectacular shot. And lighting designers will tell you that illumination is an art that can be installed no matter the weather. To give you some helpful places to start thinking about how to best light up your evening, here are five of the most dazzling feature lighting styles that are used in modern weddings.

Add a touch (or more) of vintage glamour by including vintage light bulbs into your installations. These can be hung in clusters from the ceiling to create a magical sense of being surrounded by floating lights, draped from the branches of a tree for a fantastical in-the-woods feel (not to mention a picture-perfect backdrop for a photo), and hung from floral chandeliers like in the photo above.

Weddings are a public declaration of love - why not display it with some iconic signage? For contemporary weddings, light up lettering can be the perfect way to make a big statement without having to organise much else. Large letters like LOVE or MR.&MRS. are easy ways to transform an outdoor space into a wedding-appropriate dance floor and look great as a backdrop for your group photos.

Fairy lights in and of themselves aren’t visually arresting but will always bring an immense amount of warmth and joy to the ambience of your event. When it comes to this lighting feature the general rule is the more the merrier - large-scale fairy light installations can really make both urban and outdoor environments come to life at night (think lining the walls, photoshoot backdrops, woven through trees, hanging from the ceiling like shimmering rain).

Sparklers are another staple when it comes to wedding lighting, but they’re a classic for a reason. Not all wedding venues will have exits from the ceremony site that make for a photogenic shot, but with a bunch of sparkles you can wrap things up with an incredibly festive and romantic moment. Just double check that you’ve prepared the right kind of sparkler for your guests - long handles, minimal smoke emission, and non-coloured. Otherwise not only might you not get the photo you were hoping for, but one or more of your guests may end up spending the rest of the night in the emergency room instead of continuing the celebrations at the reception.
