Why Prioritising Your Wedding Photography is a Must

By As Sweet As Images and Maria Yeonhee Ji

This story could easily go one way or the other, with great disappointment over memories lost forever or with absolute thrill and delight. What happens next will be determined by the decision you make to invest in your wedding photography or not. Find out how one bride's story went at the end of this article...

The horror stories are everywhere, which is why you should choose very wisely when it comes to prioritising and investing in your wedding photography. The list of to-do’s when planning a wedding can seem limitless, but once all is said and done; you’ve worn the beautiful dress that you’ll only wear once, the delicious food at your wedding is a distant memory, the cake has been eaten, and the party has been celebrated, there are only a few key things that people really value.

The first is obvious, the marriage to your best friend. The second is a little less obvious but still evident; the memories of your special day together! But with a day that flies by so quickly, how can you even begin to remember those special moments- in fact, half of them you won’t even see, as you can’t, and won’t, be everywhere at once.

This is where professional wedding photography comes in. It reminds you of those memories seen and unseen. It’s one of the few wedding services/products in which married couples frequently say they wish they’d invested more in. For those of you still mulling over how to best balance the budget and what you should prioritise, here are five reasons why you should prioritise your wedding photography!

1/  THE LITTLE THINGS DON’T GET FORGOTTEN

It’s the little things that make your wedding personal and meaningful - the expression of your parents as they watch you walk down the aisle, the adorable things children get up to on the day, the hilarious antics of your friends and family (and the reactions of the crowd)... However, a lot of these are details that the bride and groom just won’t have time or the headspace to experience as the day goes by so quickly. Wedding photographers will be in the places and positions that you can’t be and capture these precious moments so that they’re not forgotten in the years to come.

2/ You Capture The Milestone of Your Love.

Your wedding is a significant milestone in both of your lives, and having a record that does it justice is so important. You didn’t just wake up one day and arrive here. This took years if not decades to get to this point. Professional wedding photographers can help portray the magic, the romance, the utter joy that permeates this stage of your life in a series of stunning images worth looking at over and over again (and after months of putting so much thought into all the details to create a festive event with so much visual splendour, it would be a shame not to be able to experience it after the day is over).

3/ PHOTOS ARE PART OF THE FUN

The reality is that - as much as your friends adore you - unless you’re the first of your group of friends to get married, attending your wedding will not be a novel experience for most guests. And for the members of the bridal party, helping with the preparations can involve a sizeable amount of hard work. Which is why making the actual day an enjoyable one that makes everything feel worthwhile is so important for a successful event - and photos are part of the fun! A professional will be someone who can put even the camera-shy at ease and get a thrill from being photographed - a process which ultimately is all about making memories that matter.

4/ IT HELPS YOU SHARE YOUR DAY ONCE ITS BEEN & GONE

Maybe you and your partner have always wanted an intimate ceremony (meaning some of your friends and colleagues didn’t make it on the guest list), some guests live overseas and travelling is difficult, or a health problem strikes making attending your event impossible. No matter what the reason why somebody can’t be at the wedding itself, having wedding photography that captures the essence of the day means you can still share the day with them and make them feel included.

5/ YOU PRESERVE A PIECE OF FAMILY HISTORY

A wedding is one of those bigger events that brings together all the loved ones in your life in one place to celebrate your marriage. This makes it a unique opportunity to photograph a piece of family history with all the members present. The beauty of photographs is that they hold so much information about the story of the day - being able to show your children and grandchildren images of these moments and the people who were there to celebrate with you - is priceless.

The important thing to remember

It's all well and good to prioritise photography, but you also need to choose the right photographer  - one whose work you adore. Make sure they capture the moments, as well as incredible portraits. Wedding Photography requires a dynamic range of skills, from emotional maturity, portrait photography, documentary photography, macro photography, people skills, skills dealing with children and crazy parents, camera skills, lighting skills, flash skills, the list goes on. Choose a seasoned photographer with loads of experience in weddings. A fashion photographer for example, or a photographer that has been photographing weddings for a short amount of time, simply won’t have all the skills to deal with the wide range of situations that happen at a wedding, which can result in a few lost memories.

And here is the rest of Brownyn’s story:

"I was looking at my Wedding Photography through tears and was taken back to those very moments. We are so excited to share them with family and friends. You made us feel so comfortable and we had so much fun, which I think in the end is the most important part!” Bronwyn & Lloyd on As Sweet As Images
